When Shopping for HVAC Products, Look for the Energy Star Logo

High-efficiency HVAC systems offer residential and commercial customers a range of benefits. One reliable indicator of high-efficiency HVAC products is the Energy Star logo. When you buy heating and cooling systems that have been Energy Star certified, you’re guaranteed to be purchasing the most efficient equipment possible.

Benefits of High Efficiency

HVAC customers look for high-efficiency furnaces, air conditioners, and heat pumps that provide benefits such as:

  • Improved performance: These types of systems provide a better level of comfort than their low-efficiency counterparts. They heat and cool thoroughly and consistently.
  • Energy savings: High-efficiency HVAC systems use less energy to produce heating and cooling. This is beneficial to the local environment and helps reduce demands on local power utility companies.
  • Cost savings: Probably the most appealing benefit of high-efficiency HVAC equipment is the cost savings. These types of systems can slash monthly operating costs by substantial amounts. These systems may also qualify for energy efficiency incentives offered by local, state or federal governments, such as tax credits.

The Energy Star Program

The Energy Star program is a joint initiative of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Energy (DOE). The program tests and certifies a variety of energy-consuming devices, such as kitchen appliances, consumer electronics and HVAC systems. Equipment that passes the certification tests can earn the Energy Star label.

The Energy Star logo will be prominently displayed on the label. It indicates that the product is as energy efficient as possible. For HVAC systems, the bright yellow label is usually affixed to the exterior of the equipment. The label includes information such as manufacturer name, important features, estimated annual operating costs, and cost and power usage ranges of similar models. The label contains enough information to allow an informed comparison among similar equipment.
