Spring is the perfect time to head outside your Allen, Texas, home and work on home repairs or upgrades. The mild weather is perfect for working on windows, doors, roofing, and other parts of the home. Don’t overlook these seasonal jobs.

Upgrade Your HVAC Filters

You may already know the importance of changing your air filters once every one to three months, but do you know how to make sure you’re using the best ones? Upgrade your HVAC system this spring with a new and improved air filter if you’re not already using the best. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for air filters in your HVAC system and make sure you’re purchasing one with the highest MERV rating possible.

Get Efficient Window Coverings

Reduce heat gain in your home this spring and summer with energy-efficient window coverings. Thermal curtains will help keep heat out during the heat of the day and seal cool air in so it’s not escaping around your window. Highly reflective blinds are another smart upgrade. These can reduce heat gain by as much as 45 percent.

Seal and Weatherstrip

Check the trim around your doors and windows for air leaks that will decrease your energy efficiency. Seal any cracks or gaps around non-moving parts with caulk. Examine the weatherstripping along the bottom of windows and doors for cracks, peeling, or other signs of damage and replace as needed for a good seal when your windows and doors are closed.

Repair Roofing Shingles

Climb up to the roof and give it a thorough examination for fall and winter damage. Spring is typically the season when you’ll begin to notice leaks, missing shingles, and other problems. Look for any shingles that are buckled, cracked, or loose. While you can often replace just a few shingles yourself, you should contact a professional if you find problems with the flashing around skylights, chimneys, or vents.
