Without proper heat pump installation, even the most efficient system will fail to perform up to its standards. Careful installation requires the precise expertise and knowledge of a qualified HVAC professional.

Before opting for the lowest bid, check the contractor’s references and certifications to ensure that these eight installation points are given the proper attention in your Frisco home.

  1. Air leaks in your home can considerably lower the efficiency of your equipment. While your contractor won’t seal your air leaks, he or she should advise you regarding where leaks may occur and what you can do to seal them. A well-sealed home ensures that you can install a smaller heat pump, saving you money on the purchase of your system and on the energy bills associated with it.
  2. Your ducts should be installed inside your home’s insulation and air barrier whenever possible to save you money on heating and cooling costs.
  3. Ducts installed outside the air barrier or in unconditioned areas such as attics and crawl spaces should be insulated to R-8.
  4. The outdoor unit should ideally be installed on the north side of the house or in the shade. There should be a clearance of at least 10 feet around the top and open sides of the unit.
  5. The air leakage through new ducts should be less than 10 percent of your heat pump’s airflow. A leakage of only 5 percent is ideal and can be realized with precision workmanship.
  6. To maintain a balance in airflow, ensure that every room with a supply register also has a return register.
  7. Building cavities are major sources of air leaks and shouldn’t be used instead of return ducts. Building cavity return ducts often have moisture problems and considerably reduce your comfort level.
  8. After installing the ductwork, the contractor should test their security. Joints should be tightly sealed with mastic sealant.
