Heating and cooling companies were given until January 1, 2010 to make the switch to R-410a. However, since there are still HVAC systems in circulation that are operated by R-22, the EPA extended the deadline to the year 2020. After that time, it will impose a total ban on the sale, use and importation of R-22 into the country.
R-410a is a superior refrigerant gas because for several reasons. It is free of chlorine, a chemical that is harmful to the environment. HVAC systems that are operated on R-410a are also quieter and more energy efficient.
