Programmable thermostats are sensible devices that provide maximum comfort while saving time and energy when used correctly. If you’re having issues with your programmable thermostat and want to get the cooling or heating system running ASAP, try these troubleshooting tips before placing a service call.

Power Correction

Try these troubleshooting tips if the programmable thermostat’s digital display is off:

  • Batteries – Many programmable thermostats operate on batteries. Remove the cover to the thermostat and replace the batteries if applicable.
  • Circuit panel – Check the circuit panel for a tripped breaker.
  • Fuse – Many thermostats contain a fuse inside. Remove the cover to check the filament in the fuse. If it has separated, remove the fuse and take it to the hardware store for a match.
  • Wire contacts – It’s possible a wire contact has come loose. To check wire contacts, remove the thermostat from the wall mounting. Use the owner’s manual as a guide. If you don’t have it, most manufacturers make manuals available online for viewing or download.

Settings and Mode Testing

If the HVAC system is running but it’s not operating at your desired temperature or setting, there may be a straightforward input or usage fix:

  • Cool, heat, fan and auto: Make sure the thermostat is set to auto, regardless of cooling or heating mode. Test to see if the HVAC system works in the opposite mode you’re having trouble with. If it does, you’ve isolated the problem to heating or cooling cycles and not the thermostat.
  • Hold: Does the digital display indicate “hold”? The “hold” setting overrides program settings. Press the “hold” button to engage the program settings.
  • “Emergency” displayed: If you heat your home with a heat pump, you may see “emergency heat” on the display. This simply means the room temperature is a few degrees below the thermostat setting, and electric-resistance heating has activated. The only emergency may be high energy bills. Use a programmable thermostat compatible with your heat pump.
