When dealing with a malfunctioning central heating system, there are a few solutions that you can try for yourself before calling in the professionals. Troubleshooting heating system issues can save you time and money if the problem is a relatively simple one.
Thermostat
Check the thermostat and make sure that it’s set to “on.” Set the temperature to get the heater to start. If it doesn’t kick on, find the central heating circuit breaker and make sure it’s working. Try switching it off and then on in case it tripped.
If this doesn’t work, your next step should be to make sure the unit’s door is closed. Some heating systems have emergency switches that cause the system to cut out if a door or service panel hasn’t been properly replaced.
If the thermostat is battery-operated, try changing the batteries. If the service panel has fuses, check to see if any are burnt or blown out.
Filters
You should clean the air filter in your HVAC system monthly, particularly if there’s a lot of dust in your home. Replacing air filters regularly will improve both the performance and the efficiency of your heating system.
Pilot Light or Igniter
In gas heating units, a pilot light or igniter lights the gas. If the thermostat is functional and the heater doesn’t start after setting the temperature to turn it on, turn off the gas reset valve. Wait for five minutes and then turn it back on.
If there’s gas available and the igniter still doesn’t light, replace it or call an HVAC professional to do it. If the unit has a standing pilot, look for a flame. If you don’t see one, follow the instructions for relighting the pilot. If you can’t light it or it won’t stay lit, contact an HVAC professional.
