You can’t get through a Texas summer without an air conditioner, but which one should you choose? Pick one of these four types.

  • Split-system air conditioner: This is the most common type of air conditioner in the U.S. The outdoor condenser/compressor that you’re undoubtedly familiar with is just one half of the system. The other component, known as the evaporator or air handler, is located indoors tucked inside a cabinet or attached to your furnace blower. Refrigerant cycles between the two components, removing heat from inside the house and expelling it into the outside air.
  • Packaged air conditioner: Mobile homes and commercial properties are the most common applications for packaged air conditioners. In this case, the entire system is located outside, either on a concrete slab by the building or on the roof. It’s a good choice if you’re looking for air conditioning only or if you have electric heat.
  • Heat pump: Its name sounds as though it can only heat your home, but a heat pump has the unique ability to work forward and backward. This means it pumps heat into your home in the winter and out in the summer. A heat pump is an excellent choice in McKinney’s warm climate, since heat pumps work best when the temperature stays above freezing. The equipment is available in both packaged and split-system form.
  • Ductless mini-split: So far, the aforementioned air conditioning methods have required ductwork. If you live in an older home without ductwork, a ductless mini-split is the perfect choice. It’s more permanent and high-quality than a window air conditioner. The same as a split-system air conditioner, ductless mini-splits have an indoor and outdoor component. However, the indoor portion has an air handler built in so it delivers cold air on the spot. This solution is perfect for zoning and can also work in reverse like a heat pump to warm your home in the winter.

One of these four choices is bound to work for your McKinney area home. For more help selecting the right air conditioner, please contact us at Bill Joplin’s Air Conditioning & Heating, delivering high-quality HVAC service since 1978.
